Cheltenham Cleeve Vale Rotary Club recognises that there are disabled people and their carers who find it difficult to get out and about to have a change of scene and enjoy themselves; indeed some are housebound for much or all of their time.

We decided to take as many as we could on a day's outing aboard the Willow Trust boat on the Sharpness canal. Willow Trust is another charity and it has specially built canal boats that can accommodate disabled people and, where needed, their wheelchairs. Bishops Cleeve Carers group helped us to identify people who could gain benefit out of such a trip.

The pouring rain didn't dampen spirits and we collected them from Bishop's Cleeve and took them to Saul Junction to join the Narrow Boat.  We managed to get them all on board without them getting too wet and set off up the canal to Sharpness.

The Willow Trust staff on board treated us well and were soon handing out coffee and teas. We were all in the dry as the main saloon is capacious and completely enclosed. We stopped at Lunch time at Purton and we then tucked into packed lunches supplied by our own Adam Hands of Cleeve Catering.

After lunch the rain stopped and we were able to go out on deck and onto the bridge to take in the lovely views. We arrived back at Saul and transported our guests home after a super day out. We were then gave the Willow Trust a cheque for £325 to help this small charity in their superb work.

The club looked on this as a trial outing. All the letters we had since confirmed that it was a great success and we are now looking towards repeating it again next year and taking more people.

The Hope Clinic has been established in Lukuli, as a Mother and Baby Clinic; and also one that specialises in the prevention and treatment of the mass killers of Aids and Malaria.  It takes a leading role in the Malaria Vaccine Initiative in Uganda and has a blood testing laboratory which facilitates early diagnosis and treatment.  It is equipped to store and distribute Insecticide Treated Nets to enable families to sleep safely through the mosquito active hours of darkness.

The Club project was led by Past President Stephen Lloyd in the U.K;. working with Rotarian Philip and Clare McMinn Mitchell and their Rotary Club of Makindye in Kampala, to make this happen.

Malaria, Aids and TB are mass killers on the African continent.  In Uganda alone, 100,000 people a year, mostly children, die from Malaria - this is equivalent to a jumbo jet crashing every single day with all lives lost!

The good news hot from the press is that the clinic has just been awarded the status of HIV Centre, which means that they will now receive a budget from the Ugandan Government for drugs and to provide further support for people living with HIV.

This is just one of the beneficiaries from walkers participating the Cheltenham Cleeve Vale Rotary Club's Circular Challenge in June every year.  In this case, it was Barbara, Stephen's wife, who single handedly raised £1,200 for this clinic, by completing the walk.

To provide services to patients free or at nominal cost, regular income is required and a charity has been established in the U. K. to raise regular income to cover the ongoing running costs of the clinic including 12 staff.  Stephen LLoyd and the other trustees can be contacted on 01242 580014 or trustees@hcluganda.org website: Hope Clinic Uganda

1/10/2006 Cheltenham Circular Challenge: June the 24th 2007

The walk takes place in June and is a series of four fun and healthy fundraising walks high over the escarpment above Cheltenham and around the valleys and villages back to the start point at the Racecourse.  Walkers can choose one of four very different walks; or for those who wish to take on the full challenge, the combination of all four make a beautiful and challenging circular walk of full 26 mile marathon length.  Contact information is 01242 269479; www.cheltenhamcircularchallenge.org.uk or email at register@cheltenhamcircularchallenge.org.uk
